Are you a private investor looking to build up a portfolio of unlisted assets, or a private banking professional looking for unlisted investment solutions for your clients? In order to explain the subject of investing in unlisted companies and private equity, let's take a look at corporate finance solutions. What are the options available to an unlisted company, whether it's an SME, a midcap or a start-up, to finance its growth? In simple terms, you can go to your bank. If it meets the conditions, particularly in terms of equity capital and shares placed on the market, it can float on the stock market, with the counterparties that this implies. It can also call on investment funds to invest in unlisted assets that will become partners in its ambitions.
Private equity makes it possible to invest in unlisted companies and thus support these ‘real economy’ companies as they grow. Until recently, however, this branch of unlisted investment was reserved for a tiny minority of institutional investors capable of raising several million euros, with management companies specialising in funds investing in unlisted assets choosing to target these investors exclusively.

Private Corner is changing the game by bridging two worlds that didn't speak to each other: the world of institutional asset management companies (which provide access to these unlisted investments) and the world of wealth management professionals and private clients. Starting at €100,000, Private Corner offers to invest in the unlisted assets of growing start-ups, SMEs and ETIs for private clients, while institutionalising the offering to them. To ensure the highest standards of quality, Private Corner works exclusively with wealthy clients through its partners.

The 1st piece of advice is aimed directly at individual investors. It is essential to be accompanied by a private banking professional before investing: Wealth Management Advisers, Familly Offices or Private Banks. It is essential to be aware of the risks associated with unlisted asset funds. There is a liquidity risk, but it is not the only one; the risk of loss of capital should also be borne in mind.
You need to be able to take a long-term view, because it takes time to create value: time for the management teams to select market-leading companies, define a strategic development and transformation plan, implement it, then crystallise the value and reap the rewards by selling these unlisted companies to another fund investing in unlisted assets, to a manufacturer or by listing the company on the financial markets.
When you want to invest in unlisted assets, you need to be able to ‘forget’ about the investment. These investments are not liquid. In fact, at Private Corner, we opt for ‘closed’ products and advise you to invest in funds that are locked in for several years! If you have projects that require you to mobilise these savings, then it's better to opt for more traditional investments.
There's no such thing as market timing! It's important to be aware of this particular point: it's always a good time to invest to smooth out entry points.
Diversification is essential: it's what all asset classes have in common. The unlisted sector is a highly complex asset class, rich and full of meaning: in terms of strategies, company sizes (from start-ups to SMEs) and sectors...
We have seen (although this in no way prejudges future performance) that unlisted assets, through institutional quality funds, offer an outperformance of 5 to 7% a year compared with traditional assets.
In France, only 1% of retail portfolios are invested in unlisted assets. Compared with the 15/20% seen across the Atlantic, there is plenty of room for improvement. From Private Corner's point of view, a target allocation of 10% would be a reasonable allocation to ‘start’ investing in non-listed assets!
The 1st edition of our back-to-school conference was held on 16 January, providing an opportunity to take stock of the past year and discuss our investment plans. Our prestigious guests shared their vision of their profession and of the unlisted market.
If you would like to see the inspiring speeches made by our guests, we invite you to read the article summarising and analysing the discussions at this evening dedicated to unlisted investment in 2024.
Club Patrimoine was on hand to record the event on video. Our Board members Jacques Ittah & Dominique Gaillard, as well as Maxime Vanneaux, Director of Partner Relations, were interviewed by Vincent Touraine for the occasion.
