Extract from Les Echos article on the advantages and pitfalls of unlisted shares for private investors

According to statistics from France Invest, French private equity funds have generated an average annualized return of 14.2% over the past ten years, to the end of 2022. Investing in funds specializing in private equity offers asset diversification and attractive returns. However, the associated risks and lack of liquidity of the asset class should not be overlooked.

Stocks and bonds are the two major long-term asset classes, sharing the distinctive feature of being liquid, i.e. tradable daily on an organized market. A quality that sets them apart from real estate, for example, in which the French have largely invested directly or through real estate investment trusts (SCPI). And when it comes to private equity, i.e. acquiring stakes in the capital of unlisted companies, it's important to bear in mind that, as with real estate, these assets are not liquid. Private investors generally invest through private equity funds. They fall into several segments: funds investing in start-ups are referred to as “innovation capital”, those supporting the growth of already profitable companies as “expansion capital”, and those financing the transfer of capital from one manager to another as “transfer capital”.
